Lockwood & Co: Season 1
This 8-part series is based on Jonathan Stroud’s fantasy adventure novels of the same name and stars Ruby Stokes (Bridgerton), Ali Hadji-Heshmati (Alex Rider) and newcomer Cameron Chapman as a trio of teenage ghost hunters who battle against supernatural forces in an alternate London. Luke Treadaway and Morvern Christie also star in this promising supernatural show and if it’s successful, you can expect to see further adaptations of Stroud’s YA book series further down the line. Expected release date: 27th January 2023
The Witcher: Season 3
The third season of this popular fantasy show will pick up where Season 2 left off, with the net closing in on Ciri as various forces pursue her. Luckily, she has Geralt and Yennifer on her side so she’s not easy prey but as to whether she survives or not, well, we will just have to wait and see. Of course, if you are familiar with the fourth novel in The Witcher series, Time of Contempt, which this season is based on, you will already know how the story is likely to play out. Henry Cavill returns as the silver sword-wielding Witcher but this is the last time we will be seeing him in the show as Luke Hemsworth will pick up Geralt of Rivia’s swords in the fourth season (likely due in 2024). Expected release date: Summer 2023
Sex Education: Season 4
Sex Education is one of Netflix’s most-watched shows but rumours suggest this season could be the last. This hasn’t been officially confirmed but as the cast members are getting older (Ncuti Gatwa who plays the teenage Eric is actually 30), we can’t expect the show to last forever! This season, the students from Moordale have moved on to Sixth Form college but we suspect they will have more than their A-levels on their minds as they continue to grapple with their sexual feelings and respective sexualities. Will Eric and Adam get back together? Will Otis choose Ruby over Maeve? Will we find out who fathered Jean’s child? Will the season end with a satisfying climax? All will be revealed when the show returns to our screens at some point this year. Expected release date: Sometime in 2023
Heartstopper: Season 2
Fans of Heartstopper rejoice: Season 2 is on the way, and while we don’t have a confirmed release date, it is likely that this second season of this adorable show will be released before the year is out. We don’t know many plot details at this stage but the season will likely pick up where Season 1 left off. As you may remember from the final episode, Nick (Kit Connor) finally came out to his mum (Olivia Colman), and after falling head over heels in love with Charlie (Joe Locke), he eventually built up the courage to call him his boyfriend. The season will likely deal with the consequences of these decisions but don’t expect the same school setting of the first season, as this next instalment of the show takes the students abroad for a school trip to Paris! Expected release date: Sometime in 2023
Avatar: The Last Airbender: Season 1
The last time we saw a live-action adaptation of the popular cartoon series was in 2010 when M Night Shyamalan brought the much-derided The Last Airbender to the big screen. Fans of the original show hated the film so they could be forgiven for being a little bit cautious about this live-action series that is expected to land on Netflix sometime this year. The original creators of the show are not involved with the production, so that raises a red flag! However, the plot of this remake seems to follow the plotline of the animated original and Netflix has spent a lot of money on it (reportedly $15 million per episode) so the streaming giant is taking this adaptation seriously. As such, this should be a lot better than the lacklustre movie. Expected release date: Sometime in 2023
Kaos: Season 1
Developed and written by The End of the F***ing World creator Charlie Covell, Kaos is a dark comedy series that is based on Greek mythology. It aims to show us a different side to the Gods we are so familiar with, including Zeus (Jeff Goldblum), Poseidon (Cliff Curtis), and Hades (David Thewlis), so you shouldn’t expect the 8 episodes of this series to follow the stories you may have read out about in school. According to the Netflix listing, the show will be “a genre-bending series [that] puts a modern twist on Greek and Roman mythology, exploring themes of gender politics, power and life in the underworld.” If that all sounds a little heavy, don’t worry, as with such plot points as Zeus fearing the end of the world after developing a wrinkle, this should be good, silly fun! Expected release date: Mid-to-late 2023
Obliterated: Season 1
As this new action-comedy series is from the creators of Cobra Kai, we are in no doubt that this will be just as enjoyable as that enormously entertaining martial arts show. In terms of plotline, Obliterated tells the story of an elite special forces team who thwart a deadly threat to Las Vegas. But after deactivating a bomb that turns out to be fake, their mission, according to Netflix, is to “fight through their impairments, overcome their personal issues, find the real bomb, and save the world.” A piece of cake, right? We’re guessing not! The cast includes Teen Wolf actress Shelley Hennig and Legends of Tomorrow actor Nick Zano but in the same way that Cobra Kai resuscitated the careers of Ralph Macchio and Martin Kove, the creators of Obliterated are giving centre stages to a few old faces from movies and shows past, including C. Thomas Howell (The Outsiders) and Carl Lumbly (Cagney & Lacey). Expected release date: Sometime in 2023
Supacell: Season 1
Do we really need another superhero show? Your answer will depend on your tolerance for the genre but if you’re a little bit cynical, you might be interested to know that this one centres on a superpowered group of Black South London residents. As such, this stands out from the predominantly White comic book shows (and movies) that have landed on our screens over the years, so while the plotting of this show might seem a little familiar, it should still be applauded for its cultural setting and casting diversity. In terms of plotline, Supacell is about a group of ordinary people who unexpectedly develop superpowers. As they deal with the impact this has on their lives, they have to avoid the powerful and nefarious agents that have noticed their new abilities. We don’t know much more than that but all will be revealed when this six-part series swoops onto Netflix later this year. Expected release date: Sometime in 2023
Fall Of The House of Usher
Mike Flanagan, the man behind some of Netflix’s best horror shows, including Midnight Mass and The Haunting of Hill House, is bringing another tale of terror to our screens with this adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s creepy short story. It tells the story of a man who visits his childhood friend Roderick Usher. But as you will know if you are familiar with Poe’s classic work, this isn’t a happy reunion, as the man discovers Usher has buried his twin sister alive in the family vault! This has horrible consequences for Usher and his friend, but we won’t divulge plot details for fear of spoiling the surprises that are in store. Expected release date: We’re unsure but October 2023 seems likely
Queen Charlotte: a Bridgerton Story
This prequel series largely focuses on the lives and loves of the young Queen Charlotte (India Amarteifio) but other characters from Bridgerton will also make an appearance, including Violet Ledger/Bridgerton (Connie Jenkins-Greig) and Agatha Danbury (Arsema Thomas). So, if you have ever wondered what these characters were like in their younger days, you will now have the opportunity. Not a great deal has been revealed about the plotline of this new show, but you can expect to see Queen Charlotte’s rise to prominence and power throughout the 8 episodes. According to Netflix, the show will also delve “into Charlotte’s and King George III’s great love story and how it sparked a societal shift, creating the world of the ton inherited by the characters in Bridgerton.” If you’re a fan of Bridgerton, you’ll be glad to know that a third season of that show is on the way. There is no confirmed release date yet but a 2023 summer release has been rumoured.
