Hush

Hush is an interesting twist on the slasher genre, taking the idea of a hearing impaired woman and blending that in with a home invasion story. The result is a suspenseful chess match of a movie, as cat and mouse duke it out for supremacy. The story itself centers on Maddie, a deaf and mute writer who retreats into the woods to live a solitary life. Only, this is soon tested to the absolute extreme when a masked killer arrives, turning Maddie’s dream into a nightmare. Unique and originally crafted, Hush is one off the more unique offerings in this field.

A Quiet Place

Speaking of A Quiet Place, this uniquely original horror overshadowed Bird Box in many ways, becoming one of the most tense horrors to come from 2019. This movie plays with its sensory-specific premise a lot more than Bird Box does, with some genuinely unnerving segments and a solid screenplay. The story here takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where monsters roam the world. Armed with ultra-sensitive hearing, the only way to survive is through keeping silent and creeping around the world. After a family tragedy, the Abbott family remain ever-vigilant against the threats outside. But are their days numbered? Well written and with a sequel on the way too, A Quiet Place is quietly on course to become a modern cultural hit.

Green Room

Green Room is another cat and mouse thriller, centering on a punk rock band that find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. The story admittedly moves a little slowly but really gets going when Pat, one of the band members, witnesses a horrific murder. Off the back of this, she and the rest of the band find themselves forced to fight for their lives against a group of maniacal skinheads. Well written and undeniably tense, Green Room is well worth your time.

Blue Ruin

Blue Ruin is another great example of how to create a suspenseful thriller on a shoestring budget. And boy does Blue Ruin squeeze everything it can out of this picture! The film itself centers on Dwight Evans who has no contact with his sister after his parents were murdered ten years prior. When his parents’ killer, Wade Cleland, is released from prison, Dwight sets out to exact revenge. Only, a botched getaway spells disaster, forcing Dwight to rethink his plans. To say much more would be a disservice to this film.

It Comes at Night

It Comes At Night is certainly a polarizing movie, with a story that you’ll either love or hate. However, the movie undeniably has a creepy atmosphere that will keep you gripped until the very end. The story is one that plays on ideas of isolation and paranoia, centering around a man who establishes a domestic order with his wife and son. When a desperate young family arrives seeking refuge, a tense and claustrophobic drama unfolds. It won’t be for everyone but for those taken to the story, there should be enough to like here.

The Strangers

The Strangers doesn’t reinvent the wheel, nor does it do anything particularly unique with its set-up. What it does do however, is establish itself as a very solid home invasion movie. The story centers on a couple returning from a wedding reception, shacked up in a vacation house for the night. When three strangers show up in the middle of the night, what ensues is a fight for survival.

Panic Room

Panic Room is a well-acted thriller and arguably one of the more prolific home invasion movies out there. The story here centers on a divorced woman called Meg Altman and her diabetic daughter. After purchasing their new house, the pair find themselves forced to seek refuge in the house’s safe room when three men break in, searching for a missing fortune. Well written and beautifully shot, a slightly polarizing ending shouldn’t dissuade you from checking this one out.

Funny Games (1997)

Although the more modern remake will likely draw a larger spotlight from the younger generation, the original from 1997 is the much better option. The film centers on two violent young men who take a mother, father and son hostage in their vacation cabin, forcing them to play sick, sadistic games with one another for their amusement. This is a gripping, unsettling movie that asks some big questions about the dark desires of man. In terms of thematic relevance and tension, Funny Games absolutely nails it.

Bad Samaritan

Bad Samaritan is a decent thriller with an interesting premise. The home invasion here comes in the form of two thieves who find more than they bargained for during one fateful night on the job. Working as car valets, Sean breaks into wealthy patron Cale’s house and finds a woman called Katie held captive. What ensues from here is a decent – albeit slightly formulaic – thriller that turns the whole idea of cat and mouse on its head.

You’re Next

If you’re looking for a gory thriller with a lot of twists and turns, You’re Next should definitely be on your radar. The story begins with a family reunion which turns into a full-on massacre when a gang of masked killers invade a sprawling mansion in the middle of the country. On a ruthless mission of murder, the group bite off more than they can chew when they realize one of the group has a talent for fighting back — violently. Cleverly written and with a sharp eye for detail, this one’s well worth a watch. So there we have it, our 10 movie picks to keep you busy after watching Don’t Breathe! What do you think of our picks?
