Triangle is a cleverly written movie that plays with the concept of time in a unique and wholly spooky way. All of that builds up to a dramatic and tense final act. Identity
Inspired by Agatha Christie’s classic novel ‘Ten little Indians’, Identity is a psychological thriller armed with some great twists and decent characterization. Stranded at a desolate Nevada motel during a nasty rain storm, Identity’s story centers on ten strangers who become acquainted with each other. When they realize they’re being killed off one by one, the group try to piece together who’s behind this. Well-written and suspenseful, Identity is a chilling movie well worth checking out.
Ghost Ship
Ghost Ship is certainly more of an acquired taste than the others on this list. However, it’s undeniably similar thanks to its location and premise. This horror revolves around a salvage crew who discover a long-lost 1962 passenger ship floating lifelessly in a remote region of the Berin Sea. As the group head aboard, they soon discover that all is not what it seems. The set design in this movie is excellent but Ghost Ship is undermined slightly by its questionable ending.
The Prestige
How far would you go to be the best? That’s the question hanging over Christopher Nolan’s psychologically charged thriller, The Prestige. Much like Memento and Tenet, The Prestige has one heck of a plot twist at the end. The story here takes place just after a tragic accident where two stage magicians, Robert Angier and Alfred Borden, battle it out to create the ultimate illusion. In doing so, they sacrifice everything to try and outwit the other. But do they take things too far? Beautifully acted and gripping from start to finish, The Prestige is one of Nolan’s most prestigious pictures.
Shadow Walkers (+1)
Shadow Walkers is a B-movie that tackles some high-concept ideas with varying degrees of success. The story here revolves around three college friends who attend the biggest party of the year. Only, when they get there a mysterious phenomenon disrupts the night completely. Everything descends into chaos, which leads our characters to challenge their friendships – and whether they can stay alive. Others have described this movie as The Butterfly Effect meets American Pie and that’s a pretty accurate description to be fair. If that sounds like your jam, you can’t really go wrong with this one.
Shutter Island
Shutter Island is a film you can only watch once – but it’s one heck of a trip. This perfectly atmospheric and moody psychological drama grips you from the opening minute to the closing credits. The story takes place in 1954 with a US Marshal, Teddy Daniels, investigating the disappearance of a murderer who has escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane. To give much more away would be a disservice to this gem of a film. If you haven’t seen it already, Shutter Island is well worth a watch.
Coherence
Coherence is one heck of a thriller. It’s a movie that rewards you for repeat watches while delivering an absolutely gripping screenplay from start to finish. The premise is simple – a group of friends sit down to eat dinner when a blackout plunges them in darkness. With a comet flying overhead, the only lights in the neighbourhood stem from a house down the road. While this sounds simple, the movie soon turns into a puzzle box labyrinth that plays with the idea of time in a very clever way. Primer
Where do you start with Primer? Trying to understand and explain Primer is difficult without giving key parts of the plot away. However, the basic premise here revolves around four friends who have each built a device. Primer is intentionally confusing with the way it’s edited and that will almost certainly frustrate people. It’s definitely one of the more polarizing time travel movies and it definitely won’t be for everyone. Given the movie was shot on a budget of under $10,000 though, this is a pretty impressive venture and if you’re up for something a bit different then this is worth checking out.
Timecrimes
Timecrimes is a real sleeper hit and a compelling time loop movie that’s worth checking out if you’re looking for a decent Indie flick. The plot line centers on a man who accidentally gets into a time machine and travels back in time nearly an hour. From here, the movie explores all the usual shenanigans one would expect with a plot line like this. Timecrimes explores time travel in a pretty interesting way but unlike Primer, does so in a more simplistic way. It won’t be for everyone, and a lack of character growth does hold this one back. However, as an Indie, Timecrimes definitely has some great moments.
Happy Death Day
Happy Death Day happily fills the horror boots of the time loop, armed with a simple and interesting premise in the process. The story here follows an arrogant, spoilt student called Tree who’s forced to relive her birthday over and over again. Unfortunately this always results in her death. As the movie progresses though, she starts to make sense of what’s happening to her and tries to find a way to fight back. The result here is a movie that’s part-horror, part-comedy mash-up that fits the bill nicely for those who enjoyed Triangle.
Cube
Cube is a cerebrally charged and well written psychological horror. One of the more unique Escape room-esque projects, Cube essentially sees six complete strangers waking up inside a giant Rubik’s cube. With no knowledge of how they got there and with no food or water at hand, the group are forced to work together. The only trouble is, most rooms hold deadly traps that they need to try and evade. What’s particularly interesting here is the personality shift for each character. The stark differences in personality, as things begin to grow more desperate, leads to some very shocking and tense sequences late on. This one’s a must-watch.
