Lost

Similarities – Mystery Box On An Island

Back in 2004, a tiny show called Lost went way over-budget with its pilot episode. The consequences of that saw several people fired. Little did they know this mishap would help grow Lost into a worldwide phenomenon that completely changed the way people watched TV. This highly engrossing, mystery series revolves around a group of plane-crash survivors washing up on shore and fighting for survival on a very weird island holding many, many secrets. Across 7 seasons the show does lose its way a little late on but my gosh what an engrossing and unmissable journey it is. If you haven’t seen it already, Lost is a must-watch show.

Sharp Objects

Similarities – Mystery & Characters

Psychologically charged murder mystery Sharp Objects is as engaging as it is technically impressive. From the exquisite sound design to the perfect editing, every part of Sharp Objects has been finely tuned and crafted to create a compelling mystery. The story follows troubled reporter Camille who begrudgingly finds herself assigned to reporting a violent murder case in her hometown Wind Gap. Haunted by a troubled past mired in violence and depression, Camille feels alienated from the adults, growing closer to the young girls whom the killer in town is targeting. The show is as engaging as it is enthralling and definitely a must-watch if you’re looking for a compelling character-driven mystery. The Leftovers

Similarities – Mystery, Tone & Themes

If thematic depth is your jam, The Leftovers is definitely worth checking out. Running for three seasons, the story picks up just after a global event called the “Sudden Departure”. This inexplicable event sees the disappearance of 140 million people – or 2% of the world’s population to be precise. Following that, mainstream religions decline which paves way for a number of cults to emerge. The most notable among them is the Guilty Remnant. The story picks up from here and only grows more intriguing and interesting over time. To give much more away would be a disservice to the series but if you haven’t already, The Leftovers is a must-watch.

The X-Files

Similarities – Tone & Horror

Arguably one of the most culturally significant shows of the 20th Century, The X-Files is undoubtedly one of the most engrossing, well written mysteries on the small screen. Interwoven around a central abduction mystery are numerous stand-alone slices of horror and hidden gems across the 12 seasons. The chemistry between Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) and Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) is partly what makes this show work as well as it does but this will certainly please fans of The Third Day. Castle Rock

Similarities – Characters & Tone

While the first season of Castle Rock was much more of a mystery and mind-bending trip, the second changed its approach slightly with its new ensemble of characters. The result is a more action-orientated story combining elements of Misery and Salem’s Lot. Annie’s suffering is certainly similar to what Sam goes through and although he doesn’t quite descend into an insane rage, if character-driven stories are your jam, this one’s a doozy. Hannibal

Similarities – Horror & Unsettling Atmosphere

If you’re looking for a deliciously sinister thriller that hits all the right notes, look no further. Mads Mikkelsen does an incredible job portraying the cold, ruthless Hannibal Lector and the characters are endearing throughout. The show puts a good spin on the crime genre and it feels like a breath of fresh air in an over bloated genre filled with formulaic clones.  You can read our thoughts on Hannibal in our full season review here!

Mr. Robot

Similarities – Mystery & Unnerving Atmosphere

With dark, minimally lit scenes and a gripping plot woven throughout its four seasons, Mr. Robot manages to enthrall from start to finish. It’s not only one of the smarter written shows on TV, it’s also one that closes out its fourth season with a near-perfect finale. Steins;Gate

Similarities – Mystery Box

On paper, a time travel anime doesn’t really have any place on this list and sticks out like a sore thumb. That’s a shame because under the glitzy Japanese animation is a very well written mystery box that grips you from the start to the end of this 25 episode show. Heavily regarded as one of the best animes available to watch, Steins;Gate is well worth checking out if you’re in the mood for an atmospheric thriller.

The Prisoner

Similarities – Mystery Box

The Prisoner is the quintessential mystery box show. Don’t let the 1960’s production put you off – this story is gripping from start to finish and well worth your time. The story revolves around a retired secret agent who’s abducted and taken to what appears to be an idyllic village,. Unfortunately it’s anything but. Serving partly as a prison break thriller from this nightmarish world, The Prisoner is a show that will either completely confuse or completely engross you. Ideally, both! This is undoubtedly one of the bigger hidden gems out there and certainly worth checking out. So there we have it, our 10 TV show picks to check out when you’re finished with The Third Day. What do you think of our picks? Do you agree? Are there any notable omissions? Let us know in the comments below!
