Renewed Or Cancelled?

Since the first show’s inception way back in 1966, the Star Trek franchise has boldly gone to places we have rarely seen before, but usually forwards in time rather than backwards. This isn’t the case with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, however, as this show takes place before the events that saw Captain James T. Kirk take control of the Starship Enterprise. In this one, Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) is at the helm of the ship and he is joined by an eclectic group of crewmembers, some of whom are the younger versions of characters that first appeared in the original series of Star Trek. Despite being a throwback to the franchise’s past, the show has been warmly received by many and if you’re a fan, you might be interested in a second series. As Spock would say, it would be “highly illogical” if the series showrunners decided not to give season 2 the greenlight. But will a further run of episodes beam down onto Paramount+ or has the show been cancelled?

Will there be a Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Season 2?

Yes, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will get a second series. According to TrekMovie.com, production has wrapped on season 2 so there is a good chance that this could be another Star Trek show that lives long and prospers!

What will happen in Season 2?

At this stage, there is no information regarding story details but we do know that James T. Kirk will be making an appearance. This won’t be in the guise of William Shatner, however, as (to reuse Spock’s quote again) that would be highly illogical! Instead, Vampire Diaries star Paul Wesley will be taking on the role of the future Enterprise captain. Fan favourite characters Pike, Spock (Ethan Peck), Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), and Number One (Rebecca Romjin) are set to return, as is Dr. M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) whose “darker side” will be explored as well as his “contentious relationship with the Klingons” according to the actor when speaking about his role online. In an interview with Inverse, costume designer Bernadette Croft teased a “cool redesign for one alien species” but we don’t know whether this will be the Klingons or another species that has already faced the Enterprise crew during the show’s long history. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds star Christina Chong (Lieutenant La’an Noonien-Singh) has promised Season 2 will take things to a whole other level. When speaking to Deadline, she said: Other than these small snippets of information, little more is known about the second season but as ever within Star Trek, you can expect the crew of the Enterprise to seek out new life, new civilizations, and to boldly go where no man (or any other gender) has gone before!

When will Season 2 be released?

According to speculation online, the new series will be released in 2023 but there is no air date for the show yet. As Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premiered on Paramount+ on May 5th, 2022, in the US you can probably expect it to release around the same time next year. We will let you know more when information about the prequel series is announced. Would you like to see Star Trek: Strange New Worlds return for a second season?
