1st May
12 Mighty Orphans (2021)
Luke Wilson stars as the High School football coach who leads a scrawny team of orphans to the state championships in this inspiring true story set during the time of the Great Depression. There are loads of inspirational movies like this one, including Coach Carter and Remember the Titans. But while this might be predictable, this tale of a group of Texas orphans rising against the odds could still be worth watching.
5th May
The Staircase: Season 1
Colin Firth, Toni Colette, and Sophie Turner star in this twisty-turny true-crime thriller that is based on a documentary series of the same name. It explores the death of Kathleen Petersen who apparently died of a head injury after falling down some stairs. The authorities do not believe this version of events as told by her husband, however, and they begin to suspect foul play. If you can resist the urge to Google the case (or watch the documentary), you will avoid possible spoilers before watching this new series.
6th May
Here Today (2021)
Billy Crystal and Tiffany Haddish star in this generation gap comedy about a friendship between a veteran comedy writer and a New York street singer. Considering the talents involved, you can be guaranteed a few chuckles while watching this movie. However, you can also expect a few tearful moments as not only is Crystal’s character still grieving over the loss of his late wife but he is experiencing early signs of dementia too.
7th May
Deadlock (2021)
Bruce Willis recently retired from acting due to ill health but before he did, he starred in a number of bad movies, presumably for the financial benefit of his family. This is just one of them, a generic thriller about a group of rogue soldiers who take hostage a number of employees at a power plant. The movie is only worth watching if you’re a Bruce Willis completist but personally, I would recommend a rewatch of Die Hard or Looper instead.
8th May
The Last Letter From Your Lover (2021)
Felicity Jones, Shailene Woodley, and Joe Alwyn star in this romantic drama that covers not one but two love stories set during different time periods. The movie is an adaptation of Jojo Moyes’s 2012 novel and is ideal viewing if you’re in the mood for something hot and steamy as the summer months roll in.
The Murder Of Sarah Scazzi?
Sarah Scazzi, a 15-year old girl from the Italian town of Avetrana, vanished without a trace on the 26th of August 2010. Her family and the town she lived in became the centre of a massive media storm as the case behind her disappearance (and murder) gripped the nation. Who killed her? All will be revealed in this four-part documentary series.
9th May
Mother Teresa: For the Love of God: Season 1
This three-part documentary series gives viewers an up-close and personal look at Mother Teresa through the eyes of the people who knew and were impacted by her. The world needs more modern-day saints so give this a watch and be inspired to do what you can to bring more love and kindness into your community.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
This enjoyable continuation of the Ghostbusters franchise isn’t quite as good as the movies that preceded it but it’s an entertaining piece of nostalgia all the same. It’s also a worthy tribute to the late Harold Ramis who makes an unexpected comeback towards the end of the film.
14th May
Come Play (2020)
A feature film version of the 2017 short about a young boy called Oliver who encounters a mysterious creature that manifests itself through his smartphone and tablet. Oliver’s parents do what they can to save him but to be honest, if they had curbed his screen time in the first place, they could have avoided all of this trouble. Gillian Jacobs (Community) stars as the mum in this horror movie that was well-received by most critics.
15th May
The Survivor (2021)
Barry Levinson (Toys, Rain Man) directs this biographical drama about Harry Halt (Ben Foster), a real-life Holocaust survivor who took part in staged boxing matches with his fellow inmates for the pleasure of Nazi officers at an Auschwitz concentration camp. The movie largely takes place after these events as Halt continues to use his boxing skills in an effort to make a name for himself. Foster lost weight to take on the role and his performance has been widely praised by critics.
16th May
The Time Traveler’s Wife: Season 1
Former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat is behind this new adaptation of the beloved novel by Audrey Niffenegger. It tells the story of Henry and Clare, two lovers whose lives are complicated by his tendency to randomly time travel. Rose Leslie and Theo James star in this complex romantic tale which will hopefully be more fleshed out than the 2009 movie of the same name.
20th May
Halloween Kills (2021)
You just can’t keep a good serial killer down! Just when you think Michael Myers is out for the count, up he pops again to slaughter more unsuspecting victims! After 2018’s Halloween, David Gordon Green is back on directing duties but his sequel doesn’t quite have the impact of its predecessor. It’s still better than many of the sequels that followed John Carpenter’s 1978 film, however. Halloween Ends, the third and final part of Green’s updated trilogy is due to arrive this October.
Best Sellers (2021)
Michael Caine and the wonderful Aubrey Plaza star in this comedy about a cranky, retired author who agrees to go on a book tour to help out a young publisher. According to reviews, the two actors are predictably excellent but the movie as a whole has been criticised for its sentimentality.
22nd May
Vendetta (2022)
Another bad movie Bruce Willis made before his retirement. It’s about a father who takes the law into his own hands after his daughter is brutally murdered and inexplicably includes an acting turn from Mike Tyson! It’s best not to bother with this one unless your curiosity is peaked by the inclusion of the aforementioned boxer.
27th May
Fireheart (2022)
An animated movie set in 1930s New York about a 16-year old girl who dreams of becoming the world’s first female firefighter. Will her dreams come true or will they go down in flames? You can already guess the answer but if you’re sick of Paw Patrol and endless re-runs of Frozen, this might be one to stick on for your kids to watch.
28th May
Dear Evan Hansen (2021)
This movie adaptation of the award-winning musical was a surprising flop with the critics. Audiences seemed to like it though so while it might not be as good as the original stage show, you might still be moved by this story of a young man who tries to find his true identity after the death of one of his classmates. Ben Platt (The Politician) received a lot of commendation after playing the character of Evan Hansen on stage, so his presence alone makes this one worth a watch. If you’re also looking for another coming out story after Heartstopper, you might also want to give this one a go.
29th May
Four Good Days (2020)
Glenn Close and Mila Kunis star in this drama about a mother who helps her daughter during the four crucial days of her recovery from substance abuse. Movies about addiction are not uncommon in Hollywood but important stories like this one need to be told as they may just inspire those who can relate to the characters within.
