Episode 1 Episode 2 Episode 3 Set in the grimy underbelly of the drug smuggling world, The 410 is a story inspired by true events, armed with a smattering of strange character motivations to produce a show that can’t quite decide what it wants to be. Split across three 30 minute episodes, The 410 cuts its feature length story up into chunks but whether you’ll have the patience to see it through to the end remains to be seen. The story begins with a trucker caught on a drug run out on the Canadian highway. After being put in prison, the story switches perspectives to his daughter Surpreet who winds up getting involved in the operation and tries to break her Father out. With little reason to get behind our protagonist, the rest of the story sees Surpreet attempt to raise enough money to help him break bail (set at $250,000) whilst learning more about her Father in the process. Despite being inspired by real events, the story feels weirdly off-pace with some strange sound design choices throughout. Dialogue feels stifled, split between Indian and English, sometimes in the same scene. With a lack of background music or sound effects during these segments, the lines feel awkwardly contrived while the establishing shots do, admittedly, add an ominous presence to proceedings which helps. The acting is generally okay though but the protagonist herself is pretty unlikable, with some strange motivations that are never fully explored. After not seeing her Father for an extended period of time, her crusade to free him, and an indifference to his drug smuggling operation, makes it difficult to really empathise with her struggle. Still, there is enjoyment to be had here but it feels fleeting at best. If you’re looking for a good crime thriller, you’ll be hard pressed to find it here but there’s enough intrigue with the story to at least see this one through to its conclusion.
