Sasha’s True Intentions
Why did Sasha kiss Anos? Does she have an ulterior motive we don’t know about? Fret not, episode 3 of The Misfit Of Demon King Academy is here to answer those pressing questions. With more glimpses of the past and some teasing promise for the future, this anime teeters on a knife edge. On the one hand, this could turn out to be a slow burn thriller. At the same time though, it could also prove to be an underwhelming fantasy series with little dramatic tension. At the Academy in the morning, Misha and Sasha sit with Anos as they learn one of the Seven Great Elder Demon Emperors will be giving them a lesson. Specifically, that falls to Lord Ivis. This skull-faced man arrives moments after the teacher tells Anos to mind his manners. Anos does no such thing of course and sees the truth that Ivis has lost his memories. With the matter settled, the lesson begins and the class focus on Fusion Magic. In the wake of this, Anos and Ivis discuss how time has been rewritten so everyone has forgotten Anos’ name. Is someone passing themselves off as Anos under the guise of this Avos persona? We’ll have to wait and see of course but it is a teasing glimpse of a possible future. Later that day, Sasha speaks to Anos about the staff buried deep underground. Anos smirks, telling them this is his castle. Intending to get the staff back for himself, he heads through a secret passageway underground. He leads Misha and Sasha down to a dungeon used as a catalyst for magic. Sasha and Misha go on ahead where Sasha’s true intentions are revealed. With Misha slumped against the ground with a large gash down her chest, Sasha betrays them both and takes the staff for herself. Conjuring spells that should thwart Anos, he’s of course one step ahead and heals Misha before Sasha can make her move. Misha awakens and tells him not to hurt Sasha, eventually forcing him to let her go. As he does, Sasha bolts from the dungeon with the staff in hand, leaving Misha and Anos alone to talk. It’s here Misha reveals that she never existed in this world in the first place, which is where the episode ends.
The Review Write-Up
With a nice little twist at the end involving Sasha, it looks like we’re not going to get a love triangle after all. Instead, there are slight teases that there could be a big antagonistic force working in the shadows. Whether it’s enough to overcome our overpowered protagonist however, remains to be seen. For now though this anime continues to move along quite well, helped in part by its gorgeous hand-drawn animation. Having not read the manga I can’t comment on how well this has been adapted but it’ll be interesting to see where the series goes from here. There’s certainly elements to this that are intriguing. Whether that’s enough to translate across to Misfit becoming one of the more memorable Summer 2020 anime picks however, remains to be seen.
